Men's Skincare Routine: A Simple 3-Step Plan That Works
Introduction
Most skincare advice is written as if you have twelve products and forty-five minutes every morning. You do not, and you do not need them.
What most men need is simple. Clean skin, one product that deals with their main problem, and sunscreen. Do these three things every day and your skin will usually look and feel better than it does with a shelf full of products you stop using after two weeks.
This guide gives you the full plan, explains why each step is there, and covers the thing most skincare articles ignore: shaving.
Does Men's Skin Need a Different Approach?
Not totally different. But on average, men's skin has a few things going on that a routine should plan for:
- More oil. Men's skin tends to be oilier, so pores can clog more easily and shine shows up faster, especially in Indian heat and humidity.
- Thicker skin, more sweat. Long commutes, gyms, helmets and AC offices all add sweat and grime through the day.
- Shaving. A blade pulls at the skin every time. That can mean redness, small bumps, razor burn and ingrown hairs.
None of this needs a long routine. It just needs the right three steps done on most days.
Your 3-Step Routine at a Glance
| Morning | Night | |
|---|---|---|
| Step 1 | Cleanse | Cleanse |
| Step 2 | Treat (serum) | Treat (serum) |
| Step 3 | Protect (sunscreen) | Skip, you are done |
That is the whole plan. Two minutes in the morning, one minute at night.
Step 1: Cleanse
Why it matters: Oil, sweat and dust build up fast, especially on oily skin. If you shave, clean skin also means less irritation and fewer ingrown hairs.
What to use: A gentle cleanser that clears buildup without leaving your face tight. That squeaky, tight feeling is not a sign of clean. It usually means the cleanser stripped too much. Our Face Cleanser is a pH-balanced, sulfate-free, non-foaming cleanser for all skin types. If your skin is very oily or you get regular breakouts, use our Anti-Acne Face Wash with 1% Salicylic Acid instead. Not sure which one fits you? Our guide to the best face wash for men explains the difference.
How to use it: Wash your face morning and night. If you shave, cleanse first, so the hair is clean and softer. If you have a beard, wash the skin under it too, because oil and sweat collect there.
Step 2: Treat
Why it matters: This is the step most men skip, and it is the one that works on your actual problem, whether that is oil, breakouts, dark marks from old pimples or ingrown hairs, or uneven tone.
What to use: For most men with oily skin or the odd breakout, a niacinamide serum is a good first treatment. Niacinamide helps balance oil, can calm redness, and can help dark marks look lighter over a few weeks. Browse our face serum range to find the one that fits your concern, or read the Niacinamide Face Serum guide to know what to expect.
How to use it: Put 2 to 3 drops on clean skin, spread it over your face, and wait a minute. Use it once a day for the first week, then morning and night if your skin is comfortable. If you shave, apply it on calm skin after you shave. If it stings, wait and try again after your skin settles. Patch test on your inner forearm for 24 hours before your first use.
If breakouts are your bigger problem: use the Anti-Acne Face Wash from Step 1 together with your serum. Our Acne Control Routine puts a face wash and serum together in one bundle.
Step 3: Protect
Why it matters: This is the step men skip most, and it matters most in the long run. Sun is the biggest driver of dark spots, uneven tone and early ageing, and the damage happens whether you feel it or not.
What to use: A broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher that feels light enough to actually wear. Most men skip sunscreen because it feels greasy or leaves a pale layer, not because they are lazy. So test before you commit: put a little on the back of your hand, rub it in, and see how it looks and feels after a few minutes. Gel and light lotion types usually suit oily skin best. See our Sun Care range for daily face sunscreens, and the Sunscreen Guide if you want to know how to choose one.
How to use it: Use a generous amount on face and neck as the last step every morning, even on cloudy days, in the monsoon and when you are mostly indoors. UVA rays pass through clouds and window glass. Reapply every 2 to 3 hours if you are out in the sun for long. Do not forget your ears and the back of your neck.
Shaving Tips for Calmer Skin
Shaving is where a lot of men's skin problems start. These habits help:
- Cleanse before you shave. It softens the hair and clears oil.
- Use a sharp, clean blade. Replace it as soon as it starts to pull.
- Shave in the direction your hair grows and avoid going over the same spot again and again.
- Do not press hard. Let the blade do the work.
- Rinse with cool water and pat dry. Do not rub.
- Apply your serum on calm skin afterwards, not straight on fresh cuts or irritation.
If you keep getting painful or infected-looking bumps, see a doctor. Do not just add more products.
Add a Moisturizer if Your Skin Feels Tight
Oily skin can still be dry underneath. If your skin feels tight after cleansing, or gets flaky, add a light moisturizer after your serum. It keeps your skin from making even more oil to make up for the dryness. Our Hydration Boost Moisturizer is a non-sticky gel-cream with Ceramides and Hyaluronic Acid, so it sits well under sunscreen. Keep the three core steps. Add this only if you need it.

Common Mistakes Men Make
- Skipping sunscreen. The most common one.
- Scrubbing harder for oily skin. It irritates the skin and can make oil worse.
- Using a harsh soap or body wash on the face. Use a face cleanser.
- Adding five new products at once. Start with the three steps, then add one thing at a time.
- Switching products every week. Skin needs weeks, not days.
What Results Should You Expect?
- First 1 to 2 weeks: less oiliness and calmer skin are often noticeable.
- 4 to 6 weeks: dark marks and tone can start to look more even with regular use and daily sunscreen.
- Longer term: sunscreen helps keep sun damage from building up.
Results vary from person to person. Do the routine most days, because that is what works.
When to See a Doctor
A skincare routine is not a treatment. See a doctor or dermatologist if you notice:
- Painful, deep or pus-filled pimples, or acne that is leaving scars
- Repeated ingrown hairs or bumps in the beard area that do not settle
- A rash, swelling or burning that does not go away after you stop a product
- A mole or patch that is changing in size, colour or shape
