Zinc PCA

Zinc has a long, well-studied track record for calming inflamed, acne-prone skin. Zinc PCA is the form Mystic Dust uses topically — chosen because it controls oil without the drying, stripping effect of stronger zinc salts.

Description

What is it?

Zinc PCA is the zinc salt of pyrrolidone carboxylic acid (PCA) — a humectant compound your skin already produces as part of its own Natural Moisturizing Factor. Pairing zinc with PCA gives you a topical form that’s gentler and better tolerated than plain zinc sulfate, while still carrying zinc’s oil-balancing benefit to the skin’s surface.

What does it actually do?

Zinc calms inflammation at a cellular level. According to PubMed, a mechanism study on acne patients given oral zinc gluconate (Dreno B, Trossaert M, Boiteau HL, Litoux P. “Zinc salts effects on granulocyte zinc concentration and chemotaxis in acne patients.” Acta Dermato-Venereologica, 1992) found that zinc supplementation significantly reduced granulocyte chemotaxis — a key driver of the inflammatory response behind acne lesions — in 16 of 20 patients studied.
Zinc’s anti-acne use is well established in dermatology. According to PubMed, a review of zinc salts in dermatology (Stéphan F, Revuz J. “Zinc salts in dermatology.” Annales de Dermatologie et de Vénéréologie, 2004) confirms multiple controlled studies showing zinc’s efficacy on inflammatory acne lesions, with good tolerance at standard doses. Topical zinc salts have a recognized cosmetic role in oil control. According to PubMed, a review of dermocosmetic ingredients for acne (Araviiskaia E, Dréno B. “The role of topical dermocosmetics in acne vulgaris.” Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology, 2016) names zinc salts among the sebostatic (oil-reducing) and anti-inflammatory ingredients used in topical acne-care formulations. Who is it good for?

Oily, combination and acne-prone skin — anywhere excess sebum is contributing to clogged pores and breakouts.

No real precautions — Zinc PCA is well tolerated, including on sensitive skin, since it’s chosen specifically to be gentler than stronger zinc salts.

How Mystic Dust uses it

Use with caution alongside

Nothing specific — but combining several oil-control actives (Zinc PCA, Salicylic Acid and Niacinamide, say) in one routine can be drying for some skin. Patch test and build up frequency if you’re new to actives.
