Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid is one of the few acne ingredients backed by major dermatology guidelines, not just skincare marketing. Here’s what it actually does, and why it’s a genuine first-line pick.

What is it?

Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) — oil-soluble, which lets it travel into pores the way water-soluble acids can’t, breaking down the mix of oil and dead skin cells that clogs them and leads to breakouts.

What does it actually do?

Recommended in the current dermatology treatment guidelines. According to PubMed, the American Academy of Dermatology’s 2024 guideline for acne management (Reynolds RV, Yeung H, Cheng CE, et al. “Guidelines of care for the management of acne vulgaris.” Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, 2024) conditionally recommends topical salicylic acid as part of acne treatment, based on a systematic review of the evidence. Reduces oil production and inflammation at a cellular level. According to PubMed, a mechanism study in human sebocytes (Lu J, Cong T, Wen X, et al. “Salicylic acid treats acne vulgaris by suppressing AMPK/SREBP1 pathway in sebocytes.” Experimental Dermatology, 2019) found that salicylic acid reduced oil-producing cell activity and suppressed the inflammatory signaling pathway involved in acne lesions. Shows measurable improvement in real patients. According to PubMed, a multicenter clinical study (Raone B, Veraldi S, Raboni R, et al. “Salicylic acid peel incorporating triethyl citrate and ethyl linoleate in the treatment of moderate acne.” Dermatologic Surgery, 2013) on a salicylic acid-based protocol found the average acne severity score fell 49% over the study period, with no patients withdrawing due to side effects. Who is it good for?

Oily and acne-prone skin, blackheads and whiteheads, and rough or bumpy texture caused by clogged pores.

Use with care if you: - Have very dry or sensitive skin — salicylic acid can be drying with overuse - Are pregnant — check with a doctor before using higher-strength or peel-grade salicylic acid
