What is it?

Peptides are short chains of amino acids — the building blocks of proteins like collagen. In skincare, specific peptide complexes are used as “messenger” ingredients that signal skin cells to increase collagen production (Matrixyl 3000) or, in the case of Eyeseryl, to target the specific causes of under-eye puffiness.

What does it actually do?

A cyclized peptide outperformed retinol in a head-to-head clinical trial. According to PubMed, a randomized, double-blinded, active- and vehicle-controlled trial (Chang H et al. “Novel Cyclized Hexapeptide-9 Outperforms Retinol Against Skin Aging: A Randomized, Double-Blinded, Active- and Vehicle-Controlled Clinical Trial.” Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, 2025) found that twice-daily use of a cyclized hexapeptide-9 serum over 56 days significantly reduced the number, area and roughness of crow’s feet and forehead wrinkles — outperforming 0.002% retinol on nearly every measured outcome. Peptide serums measurably improve skin satisfaction and firmness in a separate trial. According to PubMed, a prospective, split-face controlled trial (Qin X et al. “Effectiveness and Safety of Recombinant Type III Humanized Collagen Solution Injection Combined With Collagen-III Multi-Peptide Serum in Improving Signs of Photoaging.” Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, 2026) found that adding a topical collagen-III multi-peptide serum significantly improved skin satisfaction scores, fine lines and firmness compared with the control side by week 12.
