Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B5)

Panthenol has one of the longest clinical track records of any skincare ingredient — first used in dermatology in the 1940s, and still one of the best-studied moisturizing, barrier-supporting actives available today.

Description

What is it?

Panthenol, also called pro-vitamin B5, is a stable alcohol form of pantothenic acid that converts to vitamin B5 once it’s absorbed into skin. It’s a humectant and skin-conditioning ingredient that’s been used in dermatology and skincare for more than 70 years.

What does it actually do?

  1. Draws in and holds onto moisture. According to PubMed, a 70th-anniversary review of topical dexpanthenol, panthenol’s active form (Proksch E, de Bony R, Trapp S, Boudon S. “Topical use of dexpanthenol: a 70th anniversary article.” Journal of Dermatological Treatment, 2017) confirms its moisturizing and skin-barrier-enhancing effects across decades of published studies, including measurable reductions in water loss through the skin. (DOI)
  2. Strengthens barrier function directly. According to PubMed, a review of topical dexpanthenol in skin disorders (Ebner F, Heller A, Rippke F, Tausch I. “Topical use of dexpanthenol in skin disorders.” American Journal of Clinical Dermatology, 2002) found it improves stratum corneum hydration, reduces transepidermal water loss, and has shown anti-inflammatory effects on UV-induced skin irritation in double-blind, placebo-controlled trials. (DOI)
  3. Confirmed again in recent randomized trial data. According to PubMed, a 2026 randomized, split-leg controlled trial (Morgado-Carrasco D, Balado-Simó P, Vivancos Cuadras F, Furmanczyk M, Delgado Ojeda J. “Efficacy of a Topical Formulation on Skin Hydration and Barrier Function in Individuals With Xerosis.” Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, 2026) on a panthenol-containing formulation found significantly greater skin hydration — up to 74% above baseline — and reduced water loss over 28 days in people with dry, sensitive skin. (DOI)

Who is it good for?

All skin types, especially dry, sensitive or barrier-compromised skin, and skin recovering from sun exposure, shaving or other active ingredients.

No real precautions — panthenol is one of the best-tolerated, lowest-irritation ingredients in skincare, considered safe even for very sensitive or reactive skin.
