N-Acetyl Glucosamine

N-Acetyl Glucosamine (NAG) has one of the more solid independent clinical trials behind it among pigmentation ingredients — tested in a real double-blind study, not just cell culture.

Description

What is it?

N-Acetyl Glucosamine (NAG) is an amino sugar — a building block your skin already uses to make hyaluronic acid — that also independently helps regulate how pigment is produced and distributed in skin.

What does it actually do?

  1. Clinically shown to reduce the visible appearance of dark spots. According to PubMed, a 10-week, double-blind, vehicle-controlled trial in 202 women (Kimball AB, Kaczvinsky JR, Li J, et al. “Reduction in the appearance of facial hyperpigmentation after use of moisturizers with a combination of topical niacinamide and N-acetyl glucosamine.” British Journal of Dermatology, 2009) found the niacinamide + NAG formulation significantly reduced the appearance of facial hyperpigmentation across four independent measurement methods, compared with a vehicle control. (DOI)
  2. Recognized among established cosmeceutical options for hyperpigmentation. According to PubMed, a review of hyperpigmentation management in darker skin tones (Grimes PE. “Management of hyperpigmentation in darker racial ethnic groups.” Seminars in Cutaneous Medicine and Surgery, 2009) lists N-acetyl glucosamine among the recognized cosmeceutical agents used for melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. (DOI)

Who is it good for?

Uneven tone, dark spots, and anyone already using niacinamide who wants a complementary pigmentation-support ingredient.

No real precautions — NAG is considered gentle and well tolerated.

How Mystic Dust uses it
