What is it?

Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride (guar HPTC) is a plant-derived cationic (positively charged) polymer made from guar gum. Because hair is naturally negatively charged, especially when damaged, this positively charged polymer is drawn to and coats the hair strand, smoothing the cuticle and reducing friction and tangling.

What does it actually do?

Cationic guar polymers are a well-established, high-performing hair-conditioning technology. According to PubMed, a cosmetic-science study comparing conditioning polymer technologies (Erazo-Majewicz P et al. “Linking enhanced deposition agent functionality with aesthetic performance.” Journal of Cosmetic Science, 2011) found that guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride polymers deliver superior deposition of conditioning materials onto hair from a cleansing formulation, improving both wet and dry lubricity (the “slip” and softness felt when running fingers through hair).
Its deposition and conditioning mechanism is well characterized against alternative conditioning polymers. According to PubMed, a formulation study (Staudigel JA et al. “Use of quaternized cassia galactomannan for hair conditioning.” Journal of Cosmetic Science, 2007) used cryo-scanning electron microscopy and mass spectrometry to directly observe and characterize how a related quaternized galactomannan polymer deposits onto and coats the hair strand, confirming the deposition mechanism this ingredient class relies on.
