Glycolic Acid

Glycolic Acid is the best-known AHA exfoliant in dermatology — but almost all its clinical evidence comes from strong, in-clinic peels, not the gentler concentration in a daily face wash. Here’s that distinction, stated plainly.

Description

What is it?

Glycolic Acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) derived from sugarcane, used to loosen the “glue” that holds dead skin cells together on the surface of the skin. It’s one of the most studied and widely used chemical exfoliants in dermatology, ranging from low-concentration rinse-off cleansers to high-concentration in-clinic peels.

What does it actually do?

  1. Glycolic acid formulations are a well-established, clinically documented exfoliation approach. According to PubMed, a review of chemical peels (Monheit GD. “Chemical peels.” Skin Therapy Letter, 2004) describes glycolic acid formulations, among other peeling-agent families, as having well-documented clinical evaluation for efficacy, technical care and safety in the dermatologic literature.
  2. A controlled trial found glycolic acid peels significantly reduced fine wrinkles after repeated applications. According to PubMed, a randomized clinical trial comparing 70% glycolic acid against 85% lactic acid peels (Prestes PS, Oliveira MMM, Leonardi GR. “Randomized clinical efficacy of superficial peeling with 85% lactic acid versus 70% glycolic acid.” Anais Brasileiros de Dermatologia, 2013) found both peeling agents significantly reduced fine wrinkles around the eye area after three monthly applications, with no improvement seen in the sunscreen-only control group. (Note: both citations concern professional-strength, in-clinic glycolic acid peels (70%) applied by a dermatologist — not the much lower concentration formulated into a rinse-off, daily-use Face Cleanser or Anti-Acne Face Wash. Mystic Dust’s cleanser-strength glycolic acid is included for gentle, everyday surface exfoliation and improved cleanser efficacy, not to replicate the wrinkle-reduction results seen with high-strength in-clinic peels above.)

Who is it good for?

Dull, congested or acne-prone skin that benefits from gentle daily exfoliation, and rough or uneven skin texture over time.

Caution: always follow with daily sunscreen, since AHAs can increase sun sensitivity. Avoid combining with other strong actives (retinol, other acids) in the same routine without easing in gradually.

How Mystic Dust uses it

Formulated in the live Face Cleanser and Anti-Acne Face Wash, at a gentle, rinse-off concentration suited to daily use.

Pairs well with

Niacinamide, Salicylic Acid — other exfoliation and acne-support actives already in the Mystic Dust range.

Use with caution alongside

Retinol, other exfoliating acids — avoid layering multiple strong actives without easing in gradually, and always follow with sunscreen.
