Colloidal Oatmeal

Colloidal oatmeal has one of the strongest clinical trial track records of any soothing ingredient in skincare — including in some of the most sensitive skin there is: babies with eczema-prone skin.

What is it?

Colloidal oatmeal is oat grain (Avena sativa) ground into an extremely fine powder that stays suspended in water and forms a light, soothing film on skin. It’s a long-recognized skin-protectant ingredient with decades of dermatological use.

What does it actually do?

Clinically proven to improve compromised, irritated skin — even in infants. According to PubMed, an open-label clinical study on children aged 3 to 72 months with mild-to-moderate atopic dermatitis (Kosmoski G, Friscia D, Mack MC, et al. “1% Colloidal Oatmeal Cream/Baby Wash Regimen Improved Atopic Dermatitis in Pediatric Patients From First Use.” Journal of Drugs in Dermatology, 2025) found significant improvements in eczema severity, skin barrier measurements and itching, with benefits appearing as early as day one. Gentle enough for atopic-prone babies. According to PubMed, a separate 4-week study on a colloidal oatmeal baby wash (Mack MC, John G, Friscia D, et al. “A colloidal oat-containing baby wash is gentle and effective for atopic-prone skin.” International Journal of Cosmetic Science, 2025) found significant improvements in dryness, redness, irritation and itching by week 4, with the product well tolerated overall. Performs comparably to a prescription barrier cream. According to PubMed, a randomized controlled trial in Black and African American children with mild-to-moderate atopic dermatitis (Lisante TA, Kizoulis M, Nuñez C, Hartman CL. “A 1% colloidal oatmeal OTC cream is clinically effective for the management of mild to moderate atopic dermatitis in Black or African American children.” Journal of Dermatological Treatment, 2023) found a 1% colloidal oatmeal cream was at least as effective and safe as a ceramide-based prescription barrier cream. Who is it good for?

Sensitive, irritated, dry or eczema-prone skin of any age — including the most reactive skin types.

No real precautions for most people — a patch test is sensible if you have a known oat allergy.
