Aloe vera is one of the oldest ingredients in skincare, and one of the most genuinely well-suited to sensitive skin. Here’s what the evidence actually supports — and how Mystic Dust keeps its aloe gels to a cosmetic, not medical, claim set.

What is it?

Aloe vera is a succulent plant whose leaf gel is used in skincare for its soothing, hydrating properties. Mystic Dust’s own aloe gels use Aloe barbadensis leaf extract/juice, including a USDA-certified source (Aloe Jaumave, Mexico) in the Mexican Aloe Vera Gel.

What does it actually do?

A randomized controlled study comparing aloe gel extracts for topical anti-inflammatory effect (Finberg MJ, Muntingh GL, van Rensburg CEJ. “A comparison of the leaf gel extracts of Aloe ferox and Aloe vera in the topical treatment of atopic dermatitis in Balb/c mice.” Inflammopharmacology, 2015) found that topically applied Aloe vera gel reduced the cutaneous inflammatory response in an animal model, consistent with aloe’s traditional use for soothing irritated skin. (Note: this is an animal-model study, not a human clinical trial — named plainly rather than presented as stronger evidence than it is. Aloe vera’s cosmetic reputation for hydration and soothing rests more on a very long history of formulation use and its high water content than on a large body of independent human RCTs.)

Who is it good for?

Genuinely all skin types, including sensitive and reactive skin — it’s one of the gentler hydrating ingredients available, which is part of why it’s formulated as a standalone gel as well as a supporting ingredient elsewhere in the range.

No real precautions for most people — a patch test is still sensible for anyone with a known plant/botanical sensitivity.

How Mystic Dust uses it

Formulated as the headline ingredient in Mexican Aloe Vera Gel (99.54% pure, USDA-certified) and Pink Aloe Vera Gel, and as a supporting ingredient in Face Cleanser and Anti-Frizz Hair Serum. Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice is also part of the Hard Water Rinse formula currently in R&D, expected to launch in the coming months.

Pairs well with

Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Niacinamide, Hyaluronic Acid — all formulated alongside aloe in one or more Mystic Dust products.
