Allantoin comes from the comfrey plant, where it’s the compound behind centuries of traditional use as a skin-soother. Here’s what the evidence says about it on its own terms.

What is it?

Allantoin is a compound naturally found in the comfrey plant, and produced synthetically for cosmetic use, with a long history in skin-soothing and gentle skin-conditioning formulas. It’s one of the mildest active ingredients used in skincare — added for its calming, skin-conditioning effect rather than to treat one specific concern.

What does it actually do?

Well-documented anti-inflammatory action. According to PubMed, a review of the anti-inflammatory properties of the comfrey genus (Mahmoudzadeh E, Nazemiyeh H, Hamedeyazdan S. “Anti-inflammatory Properties of the Genus Symphytum L.: A Review.” Iranian Journal of Pharmaceutical Research, 2022) names allantoin among the genus’s key active components that reduce inflammatory signaling and oxidative stress. Clinically studied for calming irritated skin. According to PubMed, a pilot study on adults with mild-to-moderate eczema (Draelos ZD. “A pilot study investigating the efficacy of botanical anti-inflammatory agents in an OTC eczema therapy.” Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, 2015) tested a moisturizer containing allantoin and bisabolol alongside barrier-repair lipids over two weeks, finding a statistically significant reduction in irritation, redness, dryness and itching — a 79% reduction in itching — and a 44% increase in measured skin hydration. According to PubMed, a clinical overview of comfrey (Staiger C. “Comfrey: a clinical overview.” Phytotherapy Research, 2012) reviewed multiple randomized controlled trials on topical comfrey preparations — which contain allantoin as a key active — for inflammation and skin comfort, confirming a consistent safety and efficacy pattern across trials. Who is it good for?

All skin types, especially sensitive, reactive or recently-irritated skin — post-shaving, post-sun, or after using stronger active ingredients.

No real precautions — allantoin is considered one of the gentlest, lowest-irritation ingredients used in skincare.
